Case Study: Dune Restoration

The Ferry Beach Park Association initiated a sand dune project in Spring 2009. The 24 feet of dune required 1,800 cubic yards or 90 truck loads of sand, delivered by Shaw Brothers Construction of Gorham. Then, under the direction of project coordinator Reverend Fayre Stephenson, teams of volunteers planted the dune with native American beach grass (Ammophila breviligulata) from Pierson Nurseries in Biddeford.

This project required a Permit by Rule from the Maine DEP.

Cost: $29,000 plus volunteer labor.
