ORONO - Maine Sea Grant and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension are pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Redmond of Hancock as Marine Extension Associate. Based at the Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research (CCAR) in Franklin, Redmond will be working with Maine’s aquaculture industry to develop and advance ecologically-based methods of growing marine macroalgae (sea vegetables or seaweed).

Project leaders will share highlights of recently completed studies, and seek community input in plans for developing a world-class offshore wind research site. A similar set of meetings occurred in April.
The top quality and premium price of Maine sea scallops has some people interested in starting a cultured scallop industry in Maine.
On Thursday, July 7 in Belfast, Dana Morse will present information on the advancing technology of scallop aquaculture to shellfish producers, chefs, fishermen, and others. Morse, who has visited scallop farms in Canada and Japan, will present details of various scallop production methods, market information, and business models.
Sandy beaches cover only about two percent of Maine’s vast coastline, but generate significant economic impact through tourism, recreation, and coastal living. On Friday, July 15, these diverse interests will gather at Southern Maine Community College for the Maine Beaches Conference.

Fisheries Heritage Information Manager, Downeast Fisheries Trail (based at the University of Maine, Orono or College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor): We are seeking an intern in human ecology, folklore, history, anthropology, marine sciences, new media, journalism, library sciences or a related field to collect relevant fisheries heritage resources and to develop a long-term system to catalogue the information for public use.
