Have you heard about the Maine Ocean School yet? The Maine Ocean School is a new public magnet school based in Searsport with a mission to provide a theme-based high school education focused on, you guessed it, the Ocean!

Using Maine’s deep maritime connections, the Maine Ocean School emphasizes leadership, work ethic, and transferable skills associated with careers involving the sea.

This is Natalie Springuel, from the University of Maine Sea Grant, host of Coastal Conversations. Our next program is entirely dedicated to The Maine Ocean School. We’ll hear from founders, board members, teachers, and this year’s students, the school’s first formal class. These high-schoolers are learning about biological monitoring through surveys of invasive green crabs, acquiring advanced math skills through boat design and building, and -- just like the crew on a top notch sea-going vessel -- these students are developing leadership skills and becoming one heck of a solid team.

So make a note to tune in Friday morning, December 28, 2018, when this month’s Coastal Conversation is all about The Maine Ocean School. Only on WERU community radio, 89.9 FM in Blue Hill and 99.9 in Bangor, and online at WERU.org.
