At the University of New Hampshire, a project
has been underway to demonstrate the feasibility
of aquaculture in an exposed marine environment.
The UNH study site, near the Isles of Shoals,
has been used to examine net pen culture of
finfish, and longline culture of blue mussels.
With respect to mussel culture, the equipment
and site have proven to be conducive to excellent
growth and minimal mortality, and project PI's
are now working with appropriate authorities
to develop the monitoring and regulation necessary
to bring the mussels to market.
Extension associate Dana Morse is a collaborator
in the project, and will work with PI's from
UNH to develop educational programs for aquaculturists
and fishermen in Maine. These programs will
cover the entire project, from siting and permitting,
to equipment, husbandry and marketing. Once
there has been an opportunity for project PI's
to bring product to market, educational program
development will begin.
Several presentations will be held to present
to the public information about UNH's Open Ocean
Aquaculture project.
