About Peter Kowalczyk

Proctor Academy
Proctor Academy

Peter Kowalczyk "The world is a wide and wonderful place, inhabited by a broad spectrum of plants, animals, and people. The Ocean Classroom program is just one way for young people, such as myself, to see this diversity firsthand. The program is also one of those experiences which create morally upstanding adults by placing youths in an environment where teamwork and responsibility are not just promoted, but necessary to the safety of all aboard. I cannot wait to set sail on this adventure, and it is my sincere hope that I will return home better prepared to live in this world."

About the
Ocean Classroom
Courses in Marine Science, Maritime History, Marine Applied Mathematics, Maritime Literature, and Navigation are studied in a thoroughly integrated curriculum taught by a professional academic staff. Topics in each course are arranged to correspond with the voyage itinerary. All studies are linked to the students' immediate experience as sailors and explorers. Students go beyond learning by doing....in Ocean Classroom, they discover the power of learning by living.
About Maine Sea Grant
Maine Sea Grant has awarded a $2000 scholarship to Yarmouth High School student Peter Kowalczyk to participate in a semester at sea with the Ocean Classroom Project which is affiliated with Proctor Academy of Andover, New Hampshire, and the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. Peter will spend the spring semester onboard an ocean classroom as the ship travels from the Caribbean beginning in February to Boston, Massachusetts, in late spring. He will be taking courses in Marine Science, Maritime History, Marine Applied Mathematics, Maritime Literature, and Navigation, which are studied in an integrated curriculum taught by an academic staff. Topics in each course are arranged to correspond with the voyage itinerary, and all studies are linked to the students' immediate experience as sailors and explorers.
Peter will be sending updates and images from the field when he has the opportunity to access the Internet, so check back to this site to follow his ocean classroom experience.
