Maine Sea Grant and the School of Marine Sciences at the
University of Maine invited high school-age students in
Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont to participate in the
2003 regional Nor'Easter Ocean Sciences Bowl competition.
The competition was co-sponsored by departments at the University
of Maine, the University of New Hampshire, the University
of New England, and the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.
Nationally the event is sponsored by
the Consortium
for Oceanographic Research & Education (CORE).
What is the Nor'Easter Bowl?
The Nor'Easter Ocean Sciences Bowl is
an annual regional competition for high school students
focused on topics related to the oceans. The 2003 Nor'Easter
Bowl is one of 24 regional ocean competitions that will
take place throughout the United States in February and
March. First-place winners of the
competition will receive an all-expense paid trip to San
Diego, California to particpate in the 6th annual National
Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®).
The 2003 Nor'Easter Bowl is a one-day academic tournament,
in which teams of high school students compete against other
teams from Northern New England. Through a round-robin,
double-elimination format, teams face off against one another
to answer multiple-choice, short-answer, and (new this year!)
team challenge questions. Categories for competition questions
include the physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and geography
of the oceans, the social sciences, ocean-related technology,
and current events. Teams consist of four students plus
one alternate and a coach. For details on the competition,
including rules and sample questions, please visit the National
Ocean Sciences Bowl website.
Why Participate?As
part of the National
Ocean Sciences Bowl, the
Nor'Easter Bowl provides a forum for students who excel
in math and science to receive recognition for their diligence
and talent, while broadening their understanding of the
oceans. The Nor'Easter Bowl fosters teamwork, competition,
imaginative thinking and factual recollection, while opening
students' eyes to ocean-related careers and the opportunities
available in oceanographic research. Both students and teachers
benefit from participation through the access they gain
to marine science education and scientific professionals.
By participating in the Nor'Easter Bowl, schools also play
a vital role in helping to raise public awareness of ocean
topics and ocean-related research. And don't forget the
great prizes!!! In past years, prizes at the Nor'Easter
Bowl regional competition have included cruises on research
vessels, scholarships, trips to field research stations,
computer software, and more. Winners of the 2003 Northern
New England regional competition also received an all expense-paid
trip to San Diego, California to participate in the NOSB®
national competition.
