In 2003, Maine Sea Grant provided $5,000 in program development funds to the Herring Gut Learning Center, a nonprofit education organization in the small fishing community of Port Clyde, ME. This grant supported the development of a saltwater aquaculture system, which is a central part of the Center's multi-age education programs in marine science and technology. The Center is unique in that many of its programs are targeted for children who experience difficulty in the traditional classroom setting, giving them opportunities to learn applied math, science, and technology skills that help prepare them for future careers. The Herring Gut Learning Center 's programs range from guided exploration of coastal ecosystems (for young children), to hands-on training in finfish and oyster culture (for middle and high school students).
