Bi-Annual Professional Development Workshops of the UMaine Center for Math and Science Education Research
In alternate years, the University of Maine Center for Math and Science Education Research hosts a national conference on integrating math and science education research into teaching. As part of this conference, the Center offers a series of three-day professional development workshops for conference participants.
In Spring 2006, Maine Sea Grant education coordinator, Beth Bisson, worked with UMaine faculty from the Climate Change Institute and a graduate student from the Masters in Science Teaching program to develop and deliver a workshop entitled: Data, Data Everywhere…a technology workshop for teachers working with online environmental data . Participants learned how to download and manipulate data from a variety of online environmental data sources. The workshop focused on technology skills that help educators develop inquiry-based lessons for their students to ask and answer environmental research questions using real data. The workshop included classroom and field exercises, and featured MET member, Esperanza Stancioff , as a guest speaker.
The UMaine Center for Math and Science Education Research is developing a Web site containing the educational materials produced for, and generated by, participants in this workshop. Please check back in the coming months for a link to this new site.
