The Coastal Connections curriculum unit is a set of field, lab, and classroom experiences focusing on coastal watershed study in Maine. The unit is aligned with the State of Maine Learning Results for the Middle Grades. The Coastal Connections unit provides students with scientific research skills and field opportunities that increase their awareness of human links to the local watershed, while achieving the goals of the Maine State Learning Results. The lessons in the unit were originally prepared by Mark Gunter, a science teacher at Shapleigh Middle School in Kittery, ME. Kristen Grant and Colleen Giordano at Maine Sea Grant/University of Maine Cooperative Extension expanded the lessons (with review by educators throughout the state) to meet the needs of teachers throughout Maine's coastal watersheds. For more information, please contact Beth Bisson, Maine Sea Grant education coordinator by e-mail or telephone: 207-581-1440.
