Since its inception in 1992, The Northeast Farmed Fish Health Management Workshop has served to address many of the key issues pertaining to finfish aquaculture in New England and the Maritimes. This one day event brings together members of the aquaculture industry, diagnostic and research institutions, and resource agencies to learn from invited experts on various subjects related to farming salmon and other marine species. Collaborators in the workshop include the Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center, the Maine Aquaculture Association, and the Eastern Aquaculture Veterinary Association. Sea Grant Marine Extension Team member Chris Bartlett chairs the workshop's planning committee and coordinates the organization of the event. This year’s workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at the Washington County Community College in Calais, Maine, with a welcoming reception on the evening of Monday, March 26.

USDA Aquaculture Liaison Training
U.S Department of Agriculture veterinary medical officers throughout the country have been asked to service aquaculture enterprises in their region, often with little or no prior knowledge of basic aquaculture practices. In response to this need, Maine Sea Grant collaborated with USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and others to host the “Aquaculture Training Program for USDA Aquaculture Liaisons” on September 12-14, 2006, in Eastport, Maine. Twenty-four veterinarians participated in the training, which included classroom lectures, hands-on dissections, and multiple field trips to aquaculture facilities in Maine. Topics included: physical, biological, and epizootiological concepts of aquaculture; methods to evaluate aquaculture species and facilities; key diseases of farmed aquatic species; techniques for collecting and submitting samples for diagnostic testing; and the regulatory processes for U.S. aquaculture. Due to the interest of participants, USDA APHIS plans to hold future aquaculture training opportunities for their veterinary medical officers.
Recreational Fishing Surveys
Sea Grant assisted the Maine Department of Marine Resources in conducting Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Surveys (MRFSS) in Washington County, Maine. The principal components of the survey are to gather information on the catch, participation, and effort of marine recreational fishing in selected demographics. In 2006, the MRFSS program was broadened to collect expenditure data from marine fishermen to estimate the economic importance of recreational fishing. Sea Grant devoted twelve days for surveys throughout July and August and plans to expand its survey efforts in 2007. Researchers at the University of Maine at Machias will analyze the economic contribution of saltwater angling in this region.
