Governor's
Task force on the Planning and Development
of Marine Aquaculture
The 121st Legislature
enacted a Governor's sponsored resolve
during its first regular session that
charged a task force with developing a
series of recommendations "on how to balance
the range of potential uses of state waters
and plan for the growth or marine aquaculture,
while considering all applicable scientific
data and all reasonable constraints and
opportunities." Maine Sea Grant
Director Paul Anderson chaired the 11-member
task force, which finalized its report
at the beginning of 2004. The report contained
95 recommendations for statutory, regulatory,
and policy changes to improve the systems
used for siting and management of aquaculture
in Maine, as well as the mechanisms for
public involvement. The final report,
pending legislation, and resource materials
related to the work of the task force
are available at http://www.maine.gov/dmr/aquaculture/aqtaskforce/aqtfhomepage.htm
