In 2003, Maine Sea Grant provided program development funds to The Lobster Conservancy, a nonprofit organization in Friendship, ME, that "works with fishermen and volunteers throughout the Gulf of Maine region to sustain a thriving lobster fishery through science and community education." The Sea Grant funds supported a Lobster Literacy Retreat to train Maine educators to raise lobster larvae in the classroom, and to develop lobster-related curriculum units. The retreat trained seven new teachers and six island fellows, and tested 10 new lessons for a multidisciplinary unit on lobsters. The lessons are mapped to the Maine Learning Results, and they are available on the education pages of The Lobster Conservancy Web site.
