Volunteer Position Description

Goal of Position
: To collect water samples on the Little River and watershed (including Branch Brook and the Merriland River). Water samples will be used in an innovative research project that will trace the sources of bacterial pollution using genetic fingerprinting.

Dates: December 2002 to May 2003 for Little River watershed in the towns of Wells, Kennebunk and Sanford, Maine. Participation over a shorter period of time is also possible.

Time Commitment: Samples are collected once a week, usually on Tuesday mornings (see the schedule). Other sampling will occur after it rains, because bacterial levels usually are much greater after precipitation. Because we want to sample after rain events, we need some volunteers who can be "on call." Each sample site takes about ten minutes, not including transportation to and from the site.

Description of Activities: Go to predetermined locations in and around Wells, Kennebunk and Sanford, Maine, and collect water from river using equipment supplied by the Wells Reserve. Basic scientific methods will be used to ensure water sample is uncontaminated, well-sealed and properly labeled. Getting to your sampling site may sometimes involve walking over uneven, steep and/or slippery ground. Some samples will need collecting on short notice, after rain or snow events.

  1. Willingness to work outside, sometimes in inclement weather
  2. Flexibility and reliability with schedule, since weather determines timing of some samples
  3. Ability to carefully follow directions and pay attention to detail
  4. Transportation to and from Webhannet River

Benefits:

  1. Gain experience in scientific field methods; training will be provided in methods of collecting water samples for fecal coliform bacteria tests
  2. Participate in innovative project designed to improve local water quality and streamline pollution prevention strategies
  3. Meet others who want to care for and improve the environment
  4. Learn about water quality in the Webhannet and Little River Watershed
